Dr Lelanie Brewer

Occupational Therapist

I qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1999 at the University of the Free State in South Africa, Since 2000 I have worked in the NHS, private practice, and school-based services. In 2013 I was awarded my MSc Occupational Therapy degree from Brunel University, London and in 2024, my PhD from the Population Health Sciences Institute at Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne. In addition, I hold a postgraduate qualification in sensory integration. I am a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, and I am registered with HCPC.

During my career, I have gained experience working as an Occupational Therapist in a variety of settings including clinics, schools, nurseries and with families at home. I have worked with a variety of children with developmental disorders and neurodisability across the ages of 2-18 years. My area of expertise is neurodiversity and supporting individuals with sensory processing differences, from comprehensive assessments and direct intervention to home and school programmes.  I combine evidence-based practices with a compassionate, neuro-affirming, person-centered approach to empower individuals and their families.

My passion lies in working with children and young people with developmental disorders including dyspraxia, ADHD and DCD, and autistic children and young people, and the impact that sensory processing differences can have on participation in all areas of life. Difficulties with sensory processing and integration can impact individuals’ participation at home, school and their involvement in play and leisure activities from personal care to activities like handwriting and participating in PE. I am also passionate about supporting neurodivergent people and their families by reducing stigma through education, research, compassion and understanding.

In my spare time, when I am not catching up on the latest neuroscience research, or spending time with my family, I enjoy yoga, wild swimming and going for a walk on the West Sands.
