I trained as a Speech and Language Therapist at the University of Glasgow, graduating with my BSc (Hons) degree in 1995. I continued my professional development obtaining a Post-graduate Certificate in Advanced Speech and Language Therapy from Strathclyde University in 1998 and completing my MSc in Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care in 2008 at the University of Dundee.
During my 30 year NHS career, I worked across child and adult services both as a clinician and manager with a specialist focus on neurodivergence and mental health since 2008. My work as a Speech and Language Therapist during that time included roles as an adult autism diagnostic clinician and Professional Lead for Adult Mental Health in Tayside, and Manager for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities across adult and child services in Fife. I have also undertaken roles for my professional body, leading national networks and contributing to national publications around the role of Speech and Language Therapy in the delivery of mental health services.
Throughout my career I have seen how communication differences and difficulties can have a negative impact on a person’s sense of self, their relationships and their ability to engage in daily activities such as education, employment and leisure interests. As a Speech and Language Therapist I aim to ensure that communication challenges do not have a negative impact on a person’s mental health or wellbeing or prevent them from achieving their life goals.
