Carien Sabey

Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist

My name is Carien (pronounced Ca-reen) Sabey.

I am a dedicated occupational therapist (OT) with 17 years of experience in a variety of
areas, including hospital-based work, vocational rehabilitation, mental health, community OT
with adults and children with a range of abilities and challenges.

My interests and experience are working with children and young people in the areas of
neurodevelopment, neurodivergence (including sensory processing and integration), and
developmental trauma and attachment. I have a special interest and passion for promoting
awareness of and supporting individuals with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

During my journey as an OT working with children and young people, my passion for
supporting neurodivergent individuals and families with children with a trauma or care
experienced background, progressively grew.

I am, in my personal life, a foster carer and adoptive parent. Although my lived experience
cannot be applied to other people, as everyone’s situation is unique, I do have first-hand
awareness and understanding of the challenges trauma- and care experienced and
neurodivergent individuals (as well as those supporting them), may face.

I am an enthusiastic believer of partnering with individuals and their families on a
collaborative journey where we explore and support the everyday activities, roles, and
environments that matter to them. The input I offer is holistic and very much depends on
the individual child or young person and their family and usually includes a combination of
approaches.

It excites me that I am on a lifelong learning journey, and I appreciate learning from others
through attending courses, supervision, mentoring, but most of all I value learning from the
children, young people, and families I work with
