We now offer multi-disciplinary “gold standard” ADHD assessments for children and young people. Each assessment involves a minimum of two highly qualified clinicians from different disciplines, one of which will always be a Clinical Psychologist. Our approach is thorough and aims to understand and evidence the complete profile of the child or young person. We assess key developmental, educational, and family history, mental health and sensory differences. Collaboratively, involving parents/carers, schools/colleges, and other key individuals or services who know the child well, we ensure that a full picture of the child or young person across different settings is considered. Assessments include school observations and/or in-depth school liaison as appropriate.
Post-assessment, we conduct a feedback session to share our thoughts and summarise the outcome of the assessment, forward plan, and address any questions parents/caregivers might have. A comprehensive written report is then provided, detailing the assessment procedure, findings, strengths and challenges. Post-diagnostic liaison with school/college can potentially be provided if this is indicated/desired.
We strongly believe that children, young people, and their families should be able to access support following a diagnosis, if they wish to do so. Post-diagnostic sessions and interventions with clinicians of different disciplines are available on request (please see our interventions page).
Please note: We do not accept referrals for children or adolescents with a global learning disability, who are experiencing a psychotic illness, or who are currently at high risk of harming themselves or others.
Medication
Whilst do prescribe ADHD medication for adults, we do not currently offer prescribing of ADHD medication for under 18’s. However, we can recommend private prescribers who accept our diagnostic reports and do not require re-assessment.
NHS services sometimes accept a good quality private assessment for the basis of initiating prescribing; however, this varies between specific health services and boards. We would recommend checking with your GP and/or local CAMHS team in advance of undertaking an assessment so that you are fully informed about the potential costs involved in treatment initiated privately.
We would strongly advise against commencing pharmacological treatment for your child’s ADHD, unless it is affordable for you to pay for treatment on an ongoing long-term basis, given the uncertainly of this being available via NHS routes.
